Mykonos Guide

Mykonos for beginners

Mykonos, a tiny island of the Cyclades group, is famed for its open-mindedness, cosmopolitan character and thrilling nightlife. Inhabited since ancient times, it grew in popularity among tourists in the 1930s when significant archaeological discoveries were made on the nearby island of Delos. Mykonos’ celebrity status was conferred in the 1960s when Greek tycoon Aristotle Onassis berthed his yacht here along with opera singer Maria Callas; vacay visits by silver screen stars Brigitte Bardot, Grace Kelly, Sophia Loren and Elizabeth Taylor intensified the island’s glamorous allure. Mykonos’ reputation as a party playground with a luxurious vibe has only grown in recent years.

Your first day in Mykonos

Find your bearings on Matoyianni Street… but then get lost amid the whitewashed tangle of pebbled alleys in Chora, or Mykonos Town, just a short drive from Amyth. Keep an eye out for charming little churches, and just the right shot of a blue window shutter with a splash of vermillion bougainvillea for your Insta grid.

Then follow your nose to a café for a chilled soumada—a local Mykonos drink made with almonds and rose water—or a glass of crisp Assyrtiko white wine, fermented on the island, along with a light lunch. These pedestrian laneways are a good spot to snap up a souvenir or two, before strolling to the old port on foot, where you’ll see luxury yachts moored alongside traditional fishing boats.

Next on your itinerary is a stop at the Mykonos windmills. Used on the island since the 1500s to grind wheat into flour, creating the island’s main source of income before tourism, more than a dozen are preserved today. Little Venice is an easily accessible spot to see some.

You might be tempted for a sunset ouzo here—and this is a great spot to watch dusk segue into night—but sunset beach horde riding, arranged by Amyth with a professional instructor is another appealing option, perhaps with a photo shoot add-on at a secluded beach. Afterwards, head to a local waterfront taverna for a dinner of seafood fresh from nearby waters to finish your first island day.

Your second day in Mykonos

Explore the nearby island of Delos, considered the most sacred of all islands in ancient Greek culture—according to myth, this was the birthplace of Apollo-Sun, god of daylight, and his twin sister Artemis-Moon, goddess of night light. UNESCO inscribed Delos on the World Heritage list in 1990, citing its exceptional archaeological site, remnants of its time as a cosmopolitan port between 900 BC and 100 AD. Sail directly over the Aegean’s blue waters from Amyth to Delos on a private tour to savour the rich and well-preserved archaeological wonders that remain today, including temples, markets, an amphitheatre and mosaic houses.

In the afternoon, it’s time to hit Mykonos’ best beaches. The island is home to dozens, ranging from those suited to partying with like-minded hedonistic souls around the clock (think Paradise or Paraga) to quieter ones suited to a spot of seaside reading, napping and daydreaming (think Loulos, Frangias, or Agios Sostis).

Finish your day with a sunset Champagne cruise arranged by Amyth, cruising the surrounding islands to appreciate their windswept beauty from afar as you toast to another day in paradise.

Stay longer!

You need another day here, don’t you? Whether it’s to linger in the hushed boho-luxe surrounds of your Amyth of Mykonos Agios Stefanos suite, or to satisfy a craving for some adventure, there’s always a great reason to stay another day in Mykonos.

Adrenaline-lovers might head to Korfos Bay, where calm turquoise waters and perfect wind conditions make for excellent kitesurfing. Amyth’s concierge can schedule Mykonos kitesurfing lessons suited to beginners or advanced riders, along with all necessary equipment hire.

Another option is a snorkelling trip - Mykonos offers plentiful spots for getting up close and personal with Mediterranean marine life in crystal clear seas. Amyth can arrange a private cruise to take in the best of the island’s offerings off pristine sandy beaches, tailored exactly to your needs.
