The island may be better known for its celeb-laden superyachts and the mega beach clubs on its southern shores, but on Mykonos’s elevated northern half, close to the village of Agios Stefanos and the centuries-old Armenistis Lighthouse, is Amyth, part of the Mediterranean hotel group Thanos. This new boutique gem of a hotel serves up a different version of Mykonos, one perfect for those seeking a more laidback version of the Greek island, with its endless Aegean vistas and remarkable history.
Amyth excels at the kind of barefoot luxury that originally lured A-listers of the 1960s and 1970s to the island—Jackie O., Grace Kelly and Brigitte Bardot amongst them—and continues to draw celebs such as Beyonce and Jay-Z, Bella and Gigi Hadid, George Clooney, Dua Lipa, Kendall Jenner and Chris Hemsworth. The hotel is a place of sanctuary. It’s also about surrendering to slowness, and embracing an alternate and authentic Mykonos.
Neutral hues, natural fibres, and ample use of earthy timbers and the stone that is a hallmark of the Greek island are central to Amyth’s soothing aesthetic. The hotel is a whitewashed haven of thoughtful hospitality, with 17 bijoux guest suites built around a turquoise central pool and sun-soaked terrace, dotted with sunbeds and woven beach umbrellas.
Most suites at Amyth come with views of the Aegean and either hot tubs or private pools, some with outdoor showers. All are compact but thoughtfully formed, with well-placed day beds, hammocks and sun decks. Aqua Di Parma guest amenities can also be found in the bathrooms, alongside hand-crafted pieces such as woven straw light shades adding to the sense of tranquility.
Personalised is the word at the hotel, with curated service that elevates the experience into something special. Guests can join the dedicated WhatsApp group upon check-in for a direct line to the concierge to arrange everything from a cocktail on your pool terrace, beach club reservations (should you decide to up the ante on your Mykonos stay), or private sailing excursions to the birthplace of Apollo on the neighbouring island of Delos.
There’s an emphasis on health and sustainability at the hotel’s restaurant, Amyth Kouzina, where Mediterranean flavours shine in a range of well-executed classic Greek dishes largely made using locally sourced ingredients. International standards such as burgers, (and smashed avo with eggs on toast for the Australians) also feature.
Food and drinks can be served wherever guests prefer: restaurant, pool bar or on their own private sundeck. The dining spaces and Amyth’s menus share the hotel’s pared-back ethos, spotlighting easy-going food and a focus on relaxation above all else.
